“Do you have to go home?”

“Nope.” His tone was lazy and, she thought, as satisfied as hers. She hoped so anyway. “No one’s waiting up.”

“It’s been years since I’ve lived alone. Min left this morning. The house doesn’t feel the same.”

“Have you heard from Jem?” He put his hand on her hair where it lay under his chin and stroked it gently.

“We talk on the phone every night. He’s having a terrific time and doesn’t seem to miss me, but it’s hard.”

“You two seem so close.” He hesitated. “Is it rude to ask how long…”

“His parents, Christine and James, died when Jem was seven months old. A car accident. I was twenty-five. I was watching him for the weekend. First time I had him alone.”

“I’m so sorry, Rhian.”

“He’s my family now.” Rhian’s voice was tight. “My dad left my mom before I was born, and he died when I was two. My mom had heart disease. She died when I was in college but by then we weren’t that close.” She paused and then went on. “Christine and James got together in high school and married straight out of college. They were my real family, the only ones who counted.”

“I don’t know what to say, Rhian.” His hand kept smoothing her hair and she thought he didn’t have to say anything. Holding her when she hadn’t been held in so long was enough for now.

“Tell me about your family, where are they?” she asked.

“My mom died a couple years back. She was an artist, had a studio and sold her stuff in a gallery on Cape Cod.”

“So you come by your drawing talent honestly?”

“She always encouraged me, never passed judgment.”

“What about your dad?” she prompted.
